You need mIRC for TWO very good reasons. ONE:, let me think..it was there a minute ago. Oh, yea, it's almost FREE! and (shareware) that is the biggest reason. You need more reasons, OK then, TWO: It is one of the best IRC programs on the Internet today. You can do most of the IRCII commands with mIRC. Lets say you are new to IRC or a "newbie". You get on a channel (the rooms are called "channels" on IRC) and the chanop doesn't take a liking to you right off the bat, God forbid, you get kicked. This program can put you right back on that channel with the blink of an eye. "Lets not get too cocky", it can't keep you from being "banned" from that channel. Sometimes, if you are on IRC, you may find me on the channel #Newbie. I use the nickname "LordTicK". I go there to try and help "Newbies" out. If you have question about mIRC or IRC in general, that is the place to go, on IRC, to find the answers from people who care about helping you. This mIRC program has a lot of really kewl commands much more that most of the lame IRC programs out there. I have also made a list of the most commonly used mIRC commands. These programs are usually shareware and cost a lot more than $15 US NOT FREE plus some other IRC programs tend to crash sometimes. I have never known mIRC to crash.

mIRC is an IRC program, well I guess you know that or you wouldn't be wasting your valuable time here. IRC is, "Internet Relay Chat", as YOU know. See, I did give you SOME credit. *gives big toothy smile* One of many things that I like about mIRC is the fact that it is a very easy and stable program. The features in mIRC are taking the Internet by storm, there are mIRC pages cropping up everywhere from all types of people. One of my favorite sites is one that you can get some really good information from, after you take a look at this one, of course, take a look at Tjerk Vonck's mIRC page. He is Dutch, so give him a break on the name. "Tjerk" is not a common name, even for Holland, however it should be, for some Americans that I know. :)

mIRC has one really neat feature that will blow your hair back, like the lead buffalo on a stampeed, who sees the cliff coming. Here's an idea, click the right mouse button on a windowpane, you will get a pop-up menu. Nothing new here, I know, just in case you didn't know, mIRC is no exception. You can click on a person's nickname in the channel names list then you can kick them, op them, deop them, ping them, or even slap them with one of those tire boot locking thingies that keep you from driving your car because you had too many parking tickets. Ok, I lied, about the boot thingie, but that's another story. Hey, would you like to do some customizing on those pop-up menus? Help file? "We don't need no stinking help file.." In the tool bar, click on "Misc" and then select "Popups". When you select a radio button on the top of the dialog box, you'll be able to edit the pop-up menu for the correct window:

Main window - this pop-up menu comes up when you right-click the mouse on the status window or any channel window.
Query/Chat window - this pop-up menu comes up when you right-click the mouse on any private chat or query with another person.
Channel Names list - this pop-up menu comes up when you select a name out of the list of names on the right panel in the channel window, and then right-click the mouse.

We all like to know who is pinging, fingering, or trying to see what version IRC program we are using. Since there is going to be some kind of response when they do, from mIRC, I thought maybe you would like to send something back that is fun!. Under "Tools - Remote" and then in the "Commands" field, you can put this:

1:PING:/wavplay ping.wav C:\mirc\ping.wav | /notice $nick Ping!Pong!Ping!Pong! hey lets have game.. | /ping $nick
1:FINGER:/wavplay ping.wav C:\mirc\ping.wav | /notice $nick wray@sna.com and http://www.sna.com/wray/ | /finger $nick
1:VERSION:/wavplay ping.wav C:\mirc\ping.wav | /notice $nick My, my, we are the inquizitive one aren't we? | /version $nick

This will play a sound file called ping.wav in my mirc directory, (you have to have some sort of .wav file to add in here for your machine) send the appropriate notice back to the person who was checking up on you, and then it performs the "action" back at that person. These lines above have to be put in the "bottom text box" in one straight line, do not break the lines up, or it will only do what is on that line. Make sure you have the "Listening" box checked or this won't happen for you at all.

Have you downloaded the latest version mIRC? (If not you can get it from this page) Then it supports the "wavplay" command. All you have to do is:
Download this zip file: Homer.zip This zip file contains the two .wav or "wave" files that you will need, "doh.wav" and "woohoo.wav".
Now save those files into your mIRC directory, wherever you have the mIRC program.
Then in the tool bar select, "Tools -> Remote".
Now click on "Listen -> Events" button.
Last paste the following lines in the text area:

ON 1:TEXT:woohoo:#:/splay C:\mIRC\sounds\woohoo.wav
ON 1:TEXT:wOOhOO:#:/splay C:\mIRC\sounds\woohoo.wav
ON 1:TEXT:d'oh:#:/splay C:\mIRC\sounds\doh.wav
ON 1:TEXT:doh:#:/splay C:\mIRC\sounds\doh.wav

Then click on the "OK", now you are done.
Now when someone says "woohoo", "wOOhOO", "d'oh", or "doh", in any channel, (that you are on) you will be able to actually hear that sound. :) You "can't" hear it if YOU type "woohoo", "WOOhOO", "d'oh", or "doh" yourself. I don't know it just doesn't, to answer your question. ;-) Hey this computer stuff is getting really kewl, huh?

Use some kind of windows sound recorder or use Wham to record the person's name.
Save the audio in .wav format in the mIRC directory or wherever you have the mIRC program.
Then run the "mIRC" program, don't get caught up in some conversation we are working here!
From the "Tool Bar" select "Tools - Remote"
This is the important part, give the "nickname" you want to be notified or a user number in this format:

2:lordtick
2:lordtick_

Use lowercase, but you knew that, right? If the person uses different nicknames, you might give them the same user "level"
Now click on the "Events" button.
You should already have the "listening" box checked, but if not, do so now.
Paste the following at bottom text area:

2:ON JOIN:#:/wavplay C:\mirc\thor_lordtick.wav

Click on the "OK" button and you are done.
You will now need to get some source to locate these persons, we gotta do that politically correct thing. Hey what the hell, just use the "nickname" of that person. You might use some of the nicks that they use, if you know what they are, that is. If the person, you are trying to locate is a "nick thief". Then wish the person you have sent a /msg to a nice day and then hunt down that friend, give them a nice little pie in the face for embarrassing you like that. Then you can be on your way knowing you have a nick that really IS yours.

Every time I use one of my "alias files" on IRC someone pops up and says, "Hey, how did you do that so fast!" This trick is easy, fast, and simple. Wait! I think "easy" and "simple" are the same thing. oh well. When you do an "action" from the "alias files" and want to put some text into it too, here is what you have to do for that to happen:

In response to "some" of the email that I get for these pages. I will give you the "Tip" about how to put your name or message up on the "Titlebar" of your copy of mIRC. Go to "File" then "Options" click on "Extras". At the botton of this "window" you will find a box that says: "Show this text in the application titlebar." Put what you want in there "click on OK" and you are done, now back to that beer, we don't want you to get withdrawals, now do we?
On the Tool Bar you will see a little GREEN button that looks like this Click on this button to see what my "alias box" looks like.
This is the "alias" button, click on it to bring up the "dialog box"
Now you can edit some kewl aliases, first put your cursor under the last line
Your cursor should be blinking on an empty line, now you can add some kewl (cool) "aliases" like this:

/hi /me snaps his fingers and off in the distance "thunder" is heard, all of a sudden $$1 is covered with vanilla ice cream, then, from the heavens, a flash of light and $$1 is covered with choclate syrup, then whipping cream falls on $$1 from a passing cloud, out of nowhere a big bright red cherry appears on $$1's head. "He He, anyone for desert?"

The "$$1" represents the nickname of the person you are talking to. So everytime you put it in your "alias" it will say the nickname.
Now you can add whatever text you like. kewl things, bizzare things, nice things, you get the idea!
So in this case the "/hi " is the alias. Whenever you type "/hi (whoever)" it will run the above text with the nickname you typed in.
This is one of my "favorite aliases" it's called The Cool Text Alias
Click on OK and you are outa there back to that cake you were baking!
Now you are ready to take on the world of IRC. ENJOY!
